Hmmm, looks like I need a new lettering brush.
User comments:
You know I was just thinking, how come no one seems to take any notice of Ayata? If she's a new species, yet to be named in the galactic sense; why isn't any one curious? Are new races being found a lot due to all the spacefaring species at this point? So no one really cares that there is a new looking kid in their playground. Sure up until now she's mostly had a hood and such to hide herself, but now she's practically parading around. Would the movie be covering up any need for Ayata to conceal herself? You can't hide Ayata, because you'll be Iri's wingwoman in the next movie. :p
Sheela
Good dodge.

Maybe Ayata is good at being "not noticed" as a special ability, or can mess up the perception of neaby people ? That would be congruent with why he thinks the future looks all "mubby" while Iri says it's not.
But it's obvious it had to be occurring for a while. Not just because Ayata is around to muddy him up. Especially if her people had that kind of power Iri would likely be having more difficulties, with her own foresight after picking up Ayata. Which has been shown to be very little issue to her. Even more so when she was using her abilities close to Ayata a few pages ago. Sure we've been told Iri is powerful, but remember her asking for bodyguards coupled with View's very comment on it, suggested Iri isn't all powerful.
view
Well, the whole "what Iri can see vs what he can see" is important, but it'll be a while before it comes to fruition.

This IS the chapter where the plot starts in earnest. At the very end.
well I would expect the answer to be that the universe in goram huge, and there are lots and lots of known species, but very few people know them all. Most folks would see her and thinkg "oh I havnt seen that species before" but not be thinking "oh no one has ever seen that species before". Think of it like a fish, you go out and catch a fish that no one has ever identified before, but you dont know that, you just know its a fish YOU havnt seen, there are lots of fish you havnt seen that arnt anything special, why should this one be any different.
You could probably explain Ayata being unnoticeable with the fact that there is a fiction convention nearby, so she's probably being noticed by people who think "cool costume, but man that character has like no chest" or something dismissive.

I'm sure view has something else in mind though.
Sheela
Damn, you're 138 pages in, and the "plot is about to start" ?
How many delicious pages do you have planned for us? :)
Not a fiction convention. People are excited for the movie release that day. So it wouldn't really work out that no one would notice based on that. Since Ayata isn't a character from the series- wait unless she is dressed up like the Warlordess that had Jagi captured. Just thought of that.
You know that if he doesn't drop the gub he is going to get thrown across the alley by Ayata.

And loving the comic view, now back to lurking.
view
You don't have to lurk, the more comments the merrier.
Sheela
Aye, make an account, become a part of all us happy people. :)

Unless you *enjoy* lurking, that's perfectly acceptable too.

I love Ayatas expression in the second panel. But I am really freaked out by the one in the last panel. Her lack of eyebrows and nose takes her from the cutest character in the series so far, to one of the most disturbing.

On a brighter note, I like the lighting effects you are playing around with on Ayata on this page.
Another artist here so I'm gonna take a guess that the reason she doesn't have those defining features is because look how zoomed out/small she is. Do you think those details can be put in without making her face way too busy? Also you kind of come off as an ass with the way you put it. Calling her the most horrifying thing ever omg isn't really constructive to View.
pensivedragon
Since you ask, I do think they can be added without making it too busy. Just look at Panel 1, of Page 4 of this comic. In this case, I am referring to the person NEXT to Ayata, as he has a head of similar size to Ayatas on the current page, with the addition of having tattoos, and headphones, and I still do not feel it to be overly cluttered for the size. Panel 2 of this page may be an even better example.

But that aside, I was just giving my honest reaction on first viewing a new page. Often times it will be praise, sometimes it will be a criticism (hopefully constructive) or a negative reaction (like today). But it is NEVER a judgement or a condemnation. View is my absolute favourite web comic creator, and I read quite a few, so that is no mean feat.

I did not say "View, Ayata is ugly today" or "View, you need to draw ayata better/different" THAT to me is being an ass (Also, let me state for the record those are examples only and most assuredly NOT what I believe). I said that Ayata freaked ME out today. Ayata is my favourite character in this series so far. A testament to Views great writing and drawing. So seeing her suddenly look like a soulless robot, compounded be the fact the preceding panel had her with a very soulful expression, got a large reaction from me. View may have purposely drawn Ayata like that today, to get just such a reaction from readers. If so, it worked wonderfully. Or, like you said, View may simply have felt that adding in more detail would be too cluttered. Or simply decided to try it as a test, to see how little detail COULD be used. I try not to guess, and simply give my honest reactions, opinions, and critiques based on what is in front of me.

So, while my comments may occasionally be read as assholish. And I am pretty sure I have annoyed View on at least a couple of occasions. I hope that when taken in the context of ALL my posts, it can at least be seen as well intentioned. Because as an artist myself. I much prefer constructive criticism, and honest (even if negative) opinions of my work, to no comments at all. Hell, I will even take it over praise, if the praise is empty of any useful feedback. As it is one of the best ways for me to improve my work.

Also, I comment daily, and I really hope View has learned to ignore me when my comments are not appreciated. :)

In the interests of not being a horrendous hypocrite, does anyone have a suggestion on how I could have improved my comment to make it more constructive? I had thought that I had done a decent job. I listed my reaction (disturbed/ freaked out), the reason why (odd expression on Ayatas Face), and the exact cause (lack of eyebrows and nose) and I even combined it with positive feedback (the great lighting on Ayata). What else could I add/change?
view
Nah, it's fine. WhiteAier is a bit overprotective, your comments are great.

I've actually started using a new inking pen, and I couldn't get it to look right with this new pen. I've still got some practicing to do.
pensivedragon
Cool. Good to know I am not being too obnoxious too often. I shall continue to be the occasional fly in the ointment then. :P

Now, when you mention inking pen, are you talking about a new digital brush (I think you said you use FireAlpaca)? Or a actual physical pen for your wacom(or whatever you use)?
Gub! You know, a gub! The thing the gubberment issues for shooting people.
JasperWB
MAN. Ayata is so awesome lol. I love her expressions, especially the confused bliss she gets when she doesn't understand something. Like the concept of a washing machine last chapter!
Sheela
Heh, yeah, she does have an awfully large amount of stuff to take in. It reckon it would be extremely confusing from time to time.

Loving this comic so far. I really enjoy your skills with dialogue. I find it strange sometimes when you gripe over your "walls of text." I've seen walls of text in other comics, and you don't have them.

I found your other comics after you finished them -- so I now I get the experience of reading one as you're making it. I get to see you coyly dodge answers and nudge people into making false assumptions in real-time.
What's this about nudging people into making false assumptions? View isn't 100% honest and forthright?

Say it ain't so view!
pensivedragon
And the few times there is a wall of text, it is usually in the form of an authors comment, and makes for a great read. Such as those during species week.
Sheela
No, no, no - View always tell the truth !

... just not *all* of it. :D
